Non-Alcoholic drink classification
This is how The NoLo Show classifies AAFs, ANAs and LADs:
Adult Alcohol-free (AAF) drinks – also known as Zero Alcohol drinks
This is any beverage that is marketed to adults that does not contain any alcohol by volume (ABV).
Adult Non-alcoholic (ANA) drinks
This is a beverage that is marketed to adults that contains less than 0.5% ABV.
In Australia, the legal definition of a non-alcoholic drink is generally understood as a beverage containing less than 0.5% ABV, so are generally exempt from liquor licensing regulations.
Low Alcohol drinks (LAD) – and Mid Strength drinks
This is a beverage that is marketed to adults with a lower ABV than full-strength alternatives, and less than 1.2% ABV.
The Liquor Act 2007 in NSW defines liquor as a beverage containing more than 1.15% ABV.
Traders may display mid strength drinks, often beer, of 3.5% ABV or below, as this is the common threshold for drinks to be considered “low alcohol” in International award competitions.
